In recent years food for avian species in pellet form has become available. There are excellent brands in the U.S.A. and Europe. South Africa has produced a couple of brands, but the overseas ones appear superior.  Harrison’s, Zupreem, Kaytee, Pretty Bird, Versele Laga’s Nutribird, Top Organic, and Dr Mac's are but 7 quality products from the U.S.A.,Belgium and Australia.   Kaytee,& Nutribird and  are available in South Africa.

For many years I imported Harrison’s, and I feel that these are one of the best as they are manufactured from organically produced grains, nuts and corn. They have however become VERY expensive to import.

The South African brands are Avi Parrot Bix, and Animal Zone (Pet Line).

The latter makes fruit chunks (coloured), a maintrenance pellet, and a feather enhancer that contains African red palm oil.The Avi products change from time to time. My greys have started eating the A.Z. Pellets, although they won’t touch the Avi.  Both are marketed through most pet stores.

Be very wary of pellets in plastic bags with no labels.    These could have been decanted from large stocks, and may have become contaminated during the debagging process. In addition there is no nutrient information, or instructions of how to feed the pellet, or contact numbers of the manufacturers.
We in South Africa MUST become more quality conscious, and recognise our rights as consumers.
