In the wild our companion parrots (generalising) will eat berries from trees in season, probably some gnats and the odd bug in a berry, ripe fruits when available, and seeds of various types.

In captivity we have a responsibility to see that they receive a complete and balanced diet.
Various species have marginally different needs with respect to protein, calcium and fat content.

Amazons tend to store fat, and hence need a diet lower in fat. African Greys may develop a deficiency in calcium, hence calcium producing foods should be provided  It is essential that the ratio of calcium to phosphorous be correct (1:2).  Cockatoos can take a higher level of protein.

The information contained here is of a general nature, and it is always best to discuss a specific species of parrot’s requirements with a trusted avian veterinarian.
